There is no single best under-stairs storage system for every home. The useful question is whether you need tall storage, easy everyday access, a completely removable option or a way to hide clutter without adding furniture.

Best for: Shoes, school bags, wellies and the everyday hallway pile.
Good to know: Uses the footprint of your existing stairs, so it does not add another cupboard or cabinet to the hallway.

Best for: Larger collections of shoes, coats and household items when the side of the staircase is open and accessible.
Good to know: A made-to-measure option can use more of the full under-stairs area, but it also changes the visible side of the staircase.

A fitted cupboard

Best for: Bulky items such as a vacuum, coats, ironing boards and boxes.
Good to know: Simple and familiar, although the lowest part can be awkward to reach if everything is accessed through one door.

Can you spare hallway floor space?
